As the New Year is upon us most of us start to think of New Year's resolutions. Let's start the new year off right with 9 small things you can do to give you a feeling of instant success rather than adding more stress to your life by adding 9 huge goals to accomplish.

Here's a small list to help you get started... Good luck and Happy New Year!

  1. Add a little spirituality to your daily life.... Research has found spirituality can promote close family and friendship bonds, help people cope with physical or emotional pain and ease other life stressors. It can also provide a stronger sense of community particularly for those who are part of a spiritual group or community. Create new traditions for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries or even holidays. Say a prayer, read the Bible, keep a journal, and look for the beauty of nature and stop to appreciate it where you may find it.

  2. Examine Your Physical Environment......Through the air you breathe, water you drink, houses you live and the transportation you access are all things you interact with in your physical environment. Are there papers and receipts you need to file or throw away? Take just 10 minutes a day for the next five days to work on straightening up your paperwork. Poor physical environment can affect our ability and that of our families and neighbors to live long and healthy lives.

  3. Buy a plant.......Indoor plants not only enhance the overall appearance of a space, but they also boost moods, increase creativity, reduce stress, and eliminate air pollutants. Making your physical environment healthier and creating a happier you. Not only will your air quality increase, but you'll be nurturing a plant which can help with feelings of irrational emotions.

  4. Plan and Dream for your retirement.....There are several retirement calculators on financial websites making it easy to use and give you a financial goal to move towards. Ask your bank or financial broker for a paper version of a retirement calculator if you don't have access to the internet. Start the New Year off right by knowing where you are heading financially! Studies show stress in general can take years off your life, but financial stress can be worse for your overall health.

  5. Spend time with your best friend.......One hour. That's it. A one-hour lunch, a movie, a walk in the park. It doesn't really matter what you're doing, just do it! Not only will you get a sense of companionship and love, but you'll be going a long way towards stress relief. Don't have a best friend? Time to make new friends! Join a book club, get involved in your church, the options are endless!

  6. Tell one person each week that you love them....... Too easy! I'm not sure if it's because my husband and I are still in the "honeymoon phase" of our marriage, but I easily hit this goal by 7 AM. Hahaha. I'll let you know if that's still the case in 10 years ;). Make this year special, make a promise to yourself that you'll tell at least one person each week that you love them and that you're grateful to have them in your life. Not only will an expression of such intense feelings fill you will joy, but it will also fill that loved one with joy knowing you love them and care for them so intentionally as to say it weekly.

  7. Buy a new comforter or bed pillow.......I always feel sooooo much better when I get a new douvet cover, especially when the seasons changing. It only feels fitting to change the cover with the seasons. And what is better than a new pillow? I don't know either. Too many of us have old pillows on our beds that don't support our necks properly as we sleep. This can have a major affect on our moods, emotions and physical pain throughout the day.

  8. Unplug for a while..... You never really notice how much time is wasted online. Checking emails, scrolling through your Facebook news feed, watching TV or youtube for hours on end. It's so incredibly easy to get sucked in to a good TV series or go down a YouTube rabbit hole. Instead read a book, work on a craft project, play a game, write a story, take a walk, involve your family and friends to come up with creative and fun things you can do on your "tech-free" night.

  9. Get a physical......I know, I know, I know. No one and I mean no on enjoys getting a physical. But let's start the New Year right! Get your blood checked, check that mole out you've been meaning to make time for, realign your back, get your blood pressure taken. You can do it!
